Moving!  Again!

Stuff stuff stuff...

Yes that ceiling fan has no blades.  Yes that’s a dishwasher in the corner.

Time to switch gears and start dialing things in.  This could take a while…  Countertops, baseboards, bathroom (still pink), these things will have to wait.  I woke up the first night and could hear the lawn growing.  Time to get a mower…  Time to learn how that tractor works…

...kitchen floor (sans island)!

Oh, move date has been pushed out another month.  Now end of April - for real this time!

Trash break...

Soon to be counter tops.  Not now.  Just.  Later…
Picture

Not sure what to say about this.  We're thinking a frog with a worm on its back is good luck.  Or something.
Picture

Insert wood joke here…
Picture

Just really, really, sick of wood.

Here we have (in order), a double rainbow, double chicken sub to go, moving day in T minus 4 days!

More painting.  Getting ready for the carpet guys…
Picture

It really doesn’t look like much but a lot went into fixing that hole in the floor.  Plus, painted walls!
Picture

Carpet!  More Paint!  Not a very good pic of either!
Picture

Almost done flooring in the big room!
Picture

…which means moving all the wood into the big room…

Renovations Part 2

Another project:  Laying speaker and internet cable on the off chance that we will someday be relaxing in here.
Picture

The wood pile.  Apparently laying this stuff out with random size and color variation is an art in itself.  It takes more time than one would think.

Meanwhile someone is buying furniture...

...and sanding the first (and smallest) room.

Oh, an unfinished floor requires sanding…
Picture

...and planting a garden...
Picture

...and oiling the freshly sanded floor.

Perhaps it’s time to mention the cloning experiments.
Picture

Also not helping.  She sits there, looking at the same-old backyard, wondering if they will ever get a larger space to free range in.
Just a couple more d̶a̶y̶s̶  w̶e̶e̶k̶s̶ months.

Getting Sidetracked

T’s paint job looks great!  I'm falling behind (with a day job and all).  This doesn’t look like much but after cleaning off the floor staples and screws, then adding self-leveling compound to some spots we finally laid out a few floor planks.  Did I mention the walls/ceiling are painted?

Oh, this was after renting a trailer and making three trips to get the wood.  We ended up carrying 1.5 tons of wood into the trailer, then again into the house.
Picture

The pink bathroom’s gotta go…
Picture

This also doesn’t look like much but the wet drywall around the skylight needed to be replaced.  Shown here after putting in two big pieces, taping and skim coating, priming and spraying with texture.  It’s the least crappy looking drywall fix I’ve ever done!
Picture

Finally laying some floor (for real) in one of the bedrooms.  This is unfinished engineered floating maple – which is way harder to get than it should be.  It was the greenest solution we could find without going to a solid wood floor (which we couldn’t do without replacing the entire subfloor).
Picture

It started by wanting to replace a piece of sub floor that had some water damage from an old water heater leak.  Then I realized there was nothing in the corner to support the new piece.  Then I realized the outer joist (in the dark hole) was totally rotten.

This was mid February.  We decided to push our move date out a month.
Picture

We finally had to call in some outside help.  This is the other side of the dark hole (where a joist should be).  After one expensive day we got a new joist and some patched up siding – the rest of which will need to be replaced sooner rather than later.
Picture

Meanwhile the deer don’t even bother to help.  They just hang around.

Renovations Part 1

The first thing we did is remove the wall to wall carpeting and pad which left a very dirty sub floor.
Picture

…which, among other things, was covered with dozens and dozens of these anti squeak screws.  Not very flat.
Picture

As usual, heavy metal was the solution.  Much noise ensued.
Picture

A disturbingly beautiful image of carpet foam and dirty ductwork.
Picture

After a new coat of paint, freshly laid wood floor and a visit by the duct cleaners, it… actually doesn’t look as interesting.

But we’re getting ahead of ourselves...

Closing Time

It came with a tractor.  And a garage.  And a bunny.

The owner agreed to install a new roof and we closed the deal.  Then spent some time fixing things up before moving in.

In the Beginning...

This is the “before” video, originally posted by the seller.

After we closed in Jan, the plan was to do some remodeling and move in within two months.
We figured if we did most of the work ourselves we’d be able to afford some nicer things, like wood floors, granite counterparts and wool carpet, while choosing more environmental and health friendly options like low VOC paint and natural floor finish.  And wool carpet.
Time is definitely money.

(Upon review, I can say with certainty the "garden areas" are definitely NOT "deer free"!)
